Kazuhide Takahama named it "Mantilla" because it resembles a mantel draped over a fireplace. The fabric's gentle flow, like velvet on the sofa, gives it a lively look. It seems like the fabric casually drapes over the sofa, creating interesting shadows. This idea comes from taking care of furniture, when people covered furniture with fabrics during long winters.

Takahama, born in Mijasaki, Japan, in 1930, was a well-known Japanese designer. After graduating from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1953, he designed the Japanese Pavilion for the Milan Triennale. There, he met Dino Gavina, and for the next decade, he created many pieces for Gavina. Later on, he also worked with B&B Italia, Simon, and Knoll. Takahama's designs, focusing on clean lines and high-quality craftsmanship, blend Japanese and Western styles within functionalist modernism.
